About eClinicalWorks
eClinicalWorks is a private company specialized in ambulatory clinic systems, was started in 1999 by four engineers and a physician. Co-founder and CEO, Girish Kumar Navani, said in a recent Business Wire article announcing the sale of its EMR/PM System to Connecticut’s Stamford Hospital, “eClinicalWorks provides healthcare technologies that help both providers and patients improve communication, which leads to better care delivered.” [1]
eClincalWorks’ strategy to establish long-term relationships with customers, which include large and small hospitals and primary and specialty physician practices, has resulted in one of the industry’s highest customer retention rates in the country. As of January 2015, eClinicalworks was the #2 EHR vendor by market share with 10.2% of the US Market. [2]
Implementations
A 2005 Government project in New York City originally funded with $30 million in city tax levies called 'Primary Care Information Project' was aimed at bringing technology to primary care providers in poor areas. The project funded the implementation of eClinicalWorks in the inner city clinics to the tune of $19 million which was a turning point for the company, then valued at around $26 million. The software is being used by over 1000 physicans, two hospital outpatient clinics, 10 community health centers, 150 physician practices, and one women's jail. The project's fifty-member staff provides support.[3]
In February of 2007, Memorial Hermann Physician Network (formerly Memorial Hermann Health Network Providers) announced the selection of eClinicalWorks for their physician's offices. “Memorial Hermann prides itself for the most innovative solutions for improving the quality of patient care,” said Dr. Richard Blakely, Chief Medical Officer of Memorial Hermann Health Network Providers. [4] Memorial Hermann's Physician Network consists of over 3,500 providers and is the largest clinically integrated physician organization in Texas. [5]
On April 6, 2009, eClinicalWorks announced that Sam's Club would sell sell the eClinicalWorks EMR and Practice Management software as a turnkey solution for small physical practices.[6] The software will be delivered through the Software as a Service (SaaS) model. The package, which includes the software license, a Dell desktop or laptop, and installation by a Dell technician, will sell for under $25,000 for the first doctor in a practice -- $10,000 will be charged for each additional physican. Ongoing maintenance costs will be between $4,000 and $6,500 annually.[7]
Texas State University, one of the largest universities in Texas with an enrollment of over 34,000 students, will utilize eClinicalWorks’ comprehensive electronic health records (EHR) solution in its student health service. eClinicalWorks will interface with the university’s Banner student information system for demographic and eligibility information, as well as Quest Diagnostics, Austin Radiological Association and ProPharm. The integration of all of the patient’s important healthcare information will help improve the quality of patient care and patient safety. The addition of eClinicalWorks Patient Portal will provide patients and medical providers with enhanced capabilities for communication and patient education. Students will also be able to access their personal health records (PHR) from almost anywhere through the use of the Health & Online Wellness (healow™) smartphone application. 9.[8]
“Texas State is the largest provider of primary care services in the county and provides high-quality, comprehensive services to a student population of over 34,000. We wanted to partner with a software company that was committed to innovation and could help us improve healthcare services,” said Emilio Carranco, M.D., Director of the Student Health Center at Texas State University. “We selected eClinicalWorks because of its excellent track record, impressive functionality and ease of use. The patient portal and smartphone application will allow for secure communication between patients and medical providers that will lead to better patient care and outcomes.”
Texas State University’s Student Health Center is a nationally accredited health center. The Health Center provides primary care, women’s health, sports medicine and psychiatry services for students. It is no wonder that Texas State, a University offering an applied informatics Bachelor’s program & post-graduate informatics studies, would choose innovative eClinicalWorks solutions to manage the student-patient population effectively.
As of May, 2014, eClinicalWorks was implemented in over 1,147 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). This is an indication not only of the company’s interest in remaining on the forefront of compliance with federal standards, but also their ability to adapt the EHR to accommodate integrated care (primary with psychiatric) which has emerged as a required service from FQHCs.[9]
In an effort to facilitate better patient outcomes, Healthwise has partnered with eClinicalWorks to provide built-in, consumer-friendly patient instructions linked to the patient’s visit history section within the eClinicalWorks Patient Portal. Easy-to-read health information that helps patients understand the medical data found in the eClinicalWorks Patient Portal, such as lab test results, allergies, problem lists, and medicines is at the fingertips of clinicians, so that they may empower patients with decision-focused education.[10]
eClinicalWorks has also partnered with Krames Staywell, an industry leader in patient education materials. Krames StayWell’s highly illustrated patient education handouts are developed with strict adherence to the principles supporting health literacy. All are evidence-based and peer-reviewed to help ensure that education not only addresses the most current medical science, but also reflects the patient experience. All content is available in English and Spanish with hundreds of topics also in Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Arabic, French, Polish and more at no extra charge. [11]
In 2014, the ICE Health Service Corps signed a contract to implement eClinicalWorks to its facilities to be used by about 1000 healthcare personals on 200,000 patients at 23 detention centers. The contract is estimated to be $4.8 million and will continued to be effective till 2019.[12]
In November of 2012, the National Football League (NFL) announced that it is transitioning from paper medical records to electronic and that it has chosen eClinicalworks as its solution and vendor. The NFL will implement the EHR solution across all of its locations and teams to provide better coordinate care. [13]

In 2014, eClinicalWorks released Version 10 in improvement of subsequent versions and additions of features in order to meet compliance for Meaningful Use Stage 2.
